COVID-19 Update from the Utah Department of Veterans & Military Affairs

During the ongoing novel coronavirus outbreak, the safety and health of Utah’s Veterans and military community is the Utah Department of Veterans & Military Affairs’ highest priority. 

As a result, we are taking several proactive steps based on recommendations from the CDC, Utah COVID-19 Task Force and other government officials that will impact our office’s daily services to Veterans, service members and their families.

Temporary phone number

To safeguard Veterans and our employees, our offices are currently closed to the public.

However, the department will still be working remotely to support Utah’s Veterans and military community, and will be answering phones at (385) 272-8852 or emailing

All claims assistance will be remote or virtual until further notice.

UDVMA offers free claims assistance for Veterans and families that covers all federal, state and local veterans’ programs. The veteran service officers are trained and accredited by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

We will continue to offer this service to Veterans, service members and their families using Zoom, a remote conferencing tool. However, we will not take walk-in appointments or in-person meetings at this time unless by exception on an individual basis. 

If you already have a scheduled appointment, a veteran service officer will reach out to you to set up a virtual claims meeting.

Please note that due to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, it may take UDVMA slightly longer to respond to calls and emails.

The department encourages individuals to leave a message or email in case the phone line is busy. We ask that individuals leave only one voicemail and we will do our best to get back to you as soon as possible.

Postponed Events

Current CDC recommendations limit social gatherings of 10 or more individuals. As a result, the following UDVMA events, partner events and other veterans and military community events are postponed until further notice:

  • Postponed: Sisters in Service: Honoring Utah’s Women Veterans Celebration on Friday, Mar. 20 at the Utah Capitol
  • Postponed: Hiring Utah’s Heroes Career and Benefits Fair on Wednesday, Mar. 25 at the Mountain America Expo Center
  • Postponed: Utah Veterans Business Conference on Friday, May 8 at the Salt Lake Community College Miller Campus 
  • Postponed: Social or community gatherings at the William E. Christoffersen Salt Lake Veterans Home, George E. Wahlen Ogden Veterans Home, Mervyn Sharp Bennion Central Utah Veterans Home and Southern Utah Veterans Home
  • Postponed: Chapel services at the George E. Wahlen VA Medical Center

Utah Veterans Homes

Based on guidelines from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, all Utah Veterans Nursing Homes are closed to visitors. 

Homes may make some allowances. In these instances, or in cases of questions, families should contact the homes, which are administered by Avalon Healthcare, directly.
