SALT LAKE CITY — This past Friday, March 28th, the Utah State Capitol Rotunda became a place of remembrance and gratitude as the state observed Vietnam Veterans Recognition Day. This year carried added weight, marking the 50th anniversary of the official end of the Vietnam War.
The ceremony paid powerful tribute to every individual who answered the call of duty during the Vietnam era—regardless of their deployment—and to the unwavering support of their families. Attendees had the privilege of hearing firsthand accounts from Vietnam War Veterans: Terry Schow representing The American Legion, Jay C. Hess, a former Prisoner of War, and Dennis Howland of the Vietnam Veterans of America each shared their unique experience, shedding light on the challenges faced and the remarkable resilience displayed.
Governor Spencer J. Cox addressed the gathering, recognizing the profound sacrifices and dedication of Vietnam veterans. He apologized for the mistreatment many faced upon their return and affirmed the state's commitment to ensuring such experiences are never repeated. Sharing his admiration for his uncle Sam, a Vietnam veteran, Governor Cox also encouraged veterans to record their wartime experiences, highlighting the lasting impact of the conflict on their lives.
The 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War was also commemorated by the Utah Legislature with an official citation honoring Vietnam War Veterans on February 26th during the 2025 Legislative Session. This formal recognition paid tribute to the heroic contributions and sacrifices of those who served, acknowledged the deep wounds inflicted by the war, and recognized the unjust condemnation many returning service members faced.
Ultimately, the presence of Utah’s Vietnam War era veterans and their families made the day deeply meaningful—an occasion to connect, share personal stories, and receive the recognition so rightfully deserved.
