The Utah Department of Veterans & Military Affairs in partnership with the Utah Department of Health and Human Services, and the Utah National Guard is committed to the safety and well-being of our service members, veterans, and their families (SMVF). As part of the Governor's Challenge to Prevent Suicide, we are offering free gun safes to SMVF individuals who need secure handgun storage, helping to create crucial time and distance during moments of crisis.

Priority for eligibility is as follows:

  • SMVF with a resident in their primary home identified with mental health concerns posing a suicide risk.
  • Military Service Member E1-E5 with children at home who own handguns without secure storage.
  • Any SMVF with a valid DoD ID, VA ID, or state-issued veteran ID that has a viable need.
