Tyler B. Smith Biography

As the Installation Resiliency Program Manager, Tyler focuses on programs and opportunities that address the potential negative impacts to military readiness created by rapid development from surrounding communities that constrains training and operations. The goal is to solidify the vitality of military installations in the state of Utah for future generations while seeking solutions that ensure quality of life, support wildlife habitat, agriculture, and recreation.

Prior to Tyler’s current position, he worked for The Conservation Fund (TCF) as the Readiness Environmental Protection Initiative (REPI) Corporate Coordinator pursuing new opportunities with the Department of Defense and private partners to expand partnerships for military installation resiliency nationwide.

Prior to joining TCF, Tyler retired as a Brigadier General after 35 years on active duty in the U.S. Army and Utah Army National Guard. His assignments included Tank Turret Repairment with the 8 th Infantry Division stationed in Germany and deploying to Southwest Asia in support of Operation Desert Storm. Upon returning to Utah and being selected for Officer Candidate School, he commissioned as a second lieutenant into the Engineer Branch where he served in various command and staff positions. He deployed to Afghanistan in 2008 where he led a team of combat advisors to the Afghan National Army.

He served as the commander for the 85 th Civil Support Team, the Garrison Commander of Camp Williams, and the Director of Construction and Facilities Management. He was selected to serve as the Assistant Adjutant General-Army where he completed his military career in 2022.

Tyler is a graduate of Brigham Young University with a master’s in Public Administration and the U.S Army War College with a master’s in Strategic Studies.
