Utah is proud to be home to several U.S. military installations across our great state, helping to ensure our national security and defense. The State of Utah is committed to partnering with them to ensure their mission accomplishment and developing innovative ways to provide a vibrant workforce, transportation networks, energy, base support functions and supportive communities. Each installation is unique in their mission set and performs a wide variety of functions to include war-fighting, intelligence, training, maintenance, engineering, development, testing and logistics.
Most importantly, the service members and their families at these installations are vital to our state and communities. Their contributions in and out of uniform have helped make Utah the best state in the nation. Military Installations
Hill Air Force Base is an Air Force Materiel Command base located in northern Utah. Hill is home to many operational and support missions, including the 75th Air Base Wing (serving as the host organization), Ogden Air Logistics Complex (OO-ALC), and the 388th and 419th Fighter Wings. The base provides warfighting support for worldwide combatant commanders, engineering and logistics management for the F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-22 Raptor, F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, A-10 Thunderbolt II, Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile and depot maintenance of the F-16, A-10 and C-130 Hercules aircraft. U.S. Army Tooele Army Depot is a lean, flexible Western Depot Complex supporting global, multi-service Central Ammunition Management (CAM) operations and engineering precision design and support. The Depot’s mission is to provide America’s joint fighting forces with ammunition peculiar equipment (APE) in support of military missions before, during and after any contingency. U.S. Army Dugway Proving Ground is a testing center located in the Great Salt Lake Desert about 85 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah. Dugway’s mission is to protect America’s war fighters, citizens and allies against present and emerging threats and support all aspects of chemical and biological defense, meteorology smoke, obscurants, illumination, and munitions testing. Since 2009, Dugway has also been home to the Army’s Unmanned Aerial Systems Rapid Integration and Acceptance Center (RIAC) that testes various high-end unmanned systems. Utah Test and Training Range (UTTR) is located in north-western Utah and eastern Nevada. It is contained within the Great Salt Lake Desert, approximately 70 miles west of Salt Lake City, Utah. UTTR provides the largest overland safety footprint available in the Department of Defense (DoD) for aircrew training and weapons testing. UTTR provides training for air-to-ground, air-to-air, and ground force exercises. The 388th Range Squadron operates and maintains the UTTR. The squadron provides responsive open-air training and test services that support day-to-day training, large force training exercises, and large footprint weapons testing. The 388th Range Squadron provides key functions and capabilities required for range support of Air Force operational test and training programs. This includes range infrastructure systems, equipment, software, targets, facilities, data processing and display, land and airspace, security, and safety.The UTTR also has the largest overland contiguous block of supersonic authorized restricted airspace in the continental United States. Chaff and flares are authorized over much of this area. The airspace, situated over 2,624 square miles, is Air Force owned. The remainder is owned and managed by the US Army at Dugway Proving Ground. Airspace boundaries do not necessarily coincide with the boundaries of the DoD land beneath this airspace.
Camp Williams is a training site operated by the Utah Army National Guard. It is located 26 miles south of Salt Lake City. It consists of 28,000 acres of training areas and has a billeting capacity of 2,800 troops. Camp Williams is the main training site for the UTNG, including artillery, engineers, academies & other units. Training facilities include small arms weapons firing ranges, artillery firing points and maneuver areas. There are also many types of training available in the surrounding areas. This includes specialized winter, desert, mountain, and amphibious training. Most of this training can be conducted within a 50-mile radius. Camp Williams is also home to the 140th Regimental Regional Training Institute.
Roland R. Wright Air National Guard Base is located on the east side of the Salt Lake International Airport in the heart of Salt Lake City, Utah, and stands as the proud home of the Utah Air National Guard's distinguished 151st Wing. The 151st Wing is comprised of five functional groups—the 151st Operations Group (OG), 151st Maintenance Group (MXG), 151st Mission Support Group (MSG), 151st Medical Group (MDG), and the 151st Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Group (ISRG). At the core of its mission, the 151st WG operates the KC-135R Stratotanker, engaging in air refueling operations, aeromedical evacuation, and critical cargo missions. Beyond its local role, the unit serves both the Governor of Utah and the President of the United States, embodying a legacy of service and excellence dating back to 1946. Utah Military Lands Compatibility Program
The Utah Military Lands Compatibility Program aims to protect the critical training facilities vital for the nation's military preparedness. Despite their strategic importance and significant contribution of $19 billion to Utah's GDP, military installations face encroachment from urban development, jeopardizing military training and readiness. In response, Utah enacted HB 265, effective since May 3, 2023, to ensure compatible land use around eight key military installations. The program follows a three-step process, starting with the creation of compatible use plans that consider various factors. Municipalities and counties notify the Utah Department of Veterans and Military Affairs (UDVMA) of land use change applications, and the UDVMA Executive Director assesses proposed changes within 90 days, taking into account property rights, landowner aspirations, and the military's mission. The Utah Defense Alliance (UDA) is a broad-based community advocacy organization that exists to promote the continued vitality of military installations throughout Utah, particularly Hill Air Force Base. UDA maintains relationships with senior military leadership, engages with community, state and federal officials, conducts studies, sponsors events and maintains awareness of relevant issues and opportunities. The UDA was formed in the mid-1990’s, at the time of the first Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process, and BRAC remains one of their key functions. Learn more: www.utahdefensealliance.com
The Military Installation Development Authority (MIDA) exists to foster development of under utilized military land using the auspices of the military’s enhanced use lease (EUL) provisions. MIDA was authorized by the Utah Legislature during the 2007 General Session and is governed by a seven-member board comprised of elected officials and Governor appointed positions. Its primary focus, and reason for its initial creation, is the 500+ acre Falcon Hill Development at Hill Air Force Base. MIDA affects coordination with the United States Air Force, Hill Air Force Base, local communities and the commercial developer, Sunset Ridge Development Partnership.
Military Affairs Committees – Several Chambers of Commerce have vibrant, long-engaged military affairs committees that address issues, coordinate efforts and organize business leaders to support military organizations and installations across Utah. The Top of Utah Military Affairs Committee (TOUMAC) combines the efforts of both the Ogden-Weber Chamber of Commerce and the Davis County Chamber of Commerce into one coordinated efforts. The Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce also has a very active Military Affairs Committee.
